Our StoryNorthland Healthcare Products was founded in 1980 by Neil Rankine. Over the years, he and his team built the Company into one of Winnipeg's largest suppliers of home healthcare products, offering a full line of supplies, equipment and services to all facets of the medical community. Today, the Company has four outlets to better serve the growing needs of customers at home and those in hospitals and in personal care homes. All four stores carry an extensive inventory of home healthcare products ranging from basic daily living supplies like bandages, braces and supports, to a full line of mobility products like scooters, wheelchairs and walkers, and electronic items like lift/recline chairs and adjustable beds. In addition, Northland also installs home stair lifts, porch lifts and items like overhead tracking systems to assist people with disabilities. A few years ago, the need for improved mobility for disabled persons became more of a necessity than a luxury, so Northland stepped up to address this requirement by opening a van modification division. Northland will install hand controls, power seats, power doors, lifts to raise and lower a wheelchair in and out of the van, restraints and special seats that turn and move to allow for easier access into and out of the van. Today, the Company performs the majority of vehicle modifications in Manitoba. Northland has a full service department at its Bradford Street location, employing two licensed mechanics, an electronics technician and a wheelchair technician to oversee all repairs, adjustments and modifications that may be required to any type of equipment or product it sells. When asked to do so, Northland staff will make "house calls" to assess a customer's needs in their own home, then provide any installations or services that may be necessary. In response to the rapid growth in the home healthcare sector and the requirements of an aging population, Northland has recently expanded its presence in Winnipeg with the addition of three new retail outlets. The first to join the Northland family of companies in April 2003 was Tache Medical Supplies, located in the Dominion Centre in St. Boniface. The majority of Tache's customers come via the referral route from a physician or physiotherapist. The store, which is ideally located near the St. Boniface General Hospital, specializes in recognized and approved products for prosthetic and orthotic requirements and offers a personalized fitting service. In the Fall of 2003, Northland opened a new outlet in the Courts of St. James in west Winnipeg. One of the city's busiest multi-apartment block complexes, the Courts is located near the Grace General Hospital and the Assiniboine Clinic, and is home to many residents aged 65 and over. The store has a complete range of products and enjoys a busy walk-in business. A fourth store was added in the Spring of 2004 when Northland acquired Access Ability Products on Henderson Highway in North Kildonan. Located in a busy strip mall, Access Ability serves Winnipeg's eastern locale and like its "sister store" on the west side, has a wide range of products for every home healthcare requirement. |
